Golfing is an immensely popular sport and although Bristol is England's sixth biggest city, there are actually plenty of places to play if you know where to go. We asked Toni for her knowledge of local Bristol golf courses as I don’t have a clue, (I stick to Hockey – perhaps a future blog; ‘Sam’s favourite AstroTurfs).

  1. Bristol & Clifton Golf Club

Situated just four miles from the M5 and from Bristol city centre, Bristol & Clifton is easy to get to. It's a Par 72, 6,413 yards off the white tees and is immaculately kept. It is one of the more expensive in the area.

Tel 01275 393474
Cost of round: £33-45
Playing requirements: None

  1. Knowle Golf Club

Knowle represents value for money at £30 on weekdays and there is the option of starting from the 10th tee to limit waiting times which is handy. The yardage is 6,047 off the tee for a par of 70.

Cost of round: £30-45
Playing requirements: None

  1. Chipping Sodbury Golf Club

Chipping Sodbury is 12 miles from Bristol in the foothills of the Cotswolds. Accuracy is crucial on this course as there are many water hazards to avoid on many of the holes. Cheaper rates are available in the afternoons.

Tel 01454 314047
Cost of round: £25-50
Playing requirements: None

  1. Filton Golf Club

Filton Golf Club is perhaps not quite as picturesque as some of the other courses in the area it is easily accessible from the city centre and definitely worth playing.

Postcode: BS34 7QS
Tel 0117 9696968
Cost of round: £36-40
Playing requirements: None

  1. The Players Golf Club

The Players Club is located outside Bristol, south of Chipping Sodbury. With its two 18-hole courses and a 9-hole course, The Players can cater for everyone. Although it only opened in 2002, it is already regarded as one of the top courses in the country. Look out though - there is sand and water lurking on most holes.

Tel 01454 313029
Cost of round: £18-48
Playing requirements: None

  1. Tall Pines Golf Club

Tall Pines has 6,067 yards of rolling parkland course which offers views over the Bristol Channel into Wales, but you won't have to overpay for the privilege at just £20 on weekdays.

Cost of round: £20-25
Playing requirements: None

  1. Henbury Golf Club

Henbury is not the longest of courses, but it is ideally located very close to the M5 and just a few miles outside of the city centre. Toni can be found here most days when she is not working so say hi if you see her.

  1. Shortwood Lodge Golf Club

Shortwood is not in the same class as many others, but it is hard to complain at £12 for a round. Located east of Bristol and a few miles south of the M4, this won't be the best course you've ever played, but it might be the cheapest.

Tel 0117 9565501
Cost of round: £12-14
Playing requirements: None

  1. The Bristol Golf Club

The Bristol measures 6,111 yards from the back tees, so perhaps more suited to the shorter players. It is set amongst stunning scenery and has previously hosted both EuroPro and Jamega Tour events. The Bristol is located just off the M5 again, near to Cribbs Causeway

  1. Woodspring Golf & Country Club

Woodspring boasts a 27-hole golf course designed by Donald Steel, Peter Alliss and Clive Clark. It is comprised of three separate 9-hole courses, each testing different aspects of the game. At £16 this is another round that won't break the bank. Woodspring is situated between Bridgwater Road and the A370 on the way out to Bristol Airport near Barrow Gurney.
